Strategies for addressing personal biases

Awareness of potential bias and investing in resources to overcome it are key to creating an environment where all students feel welcome. While awareness is more than half the job, there are tools that can help lecturers do this. This can include culturally responsive teaching and assessment, discussions with colleagues, professional development courses, inclusive policies and practices, community engagement.

  • Culturally responsive teaching and assessment. Lecturer can work to develop culturally sensitive teaching which aims to recognise and appreciate students' cultural backgrounds. He or she can do this by integrating diverse perspectives into the curriculum, using culturally relevant materials and fostering an inclusive classroom environment. This approach not only increases student engagement but also helps to combat prejudice by valuing the contributions of all students.

  • Transparent evaluation and assessment can be an excellent tool to ensure that your evaluation is not influenced by bias. When assessing work, it can be useful to provide students with a clear assessment structure detailing what you will be aiming to achieve in your assessment. This will not only help students to structure the work, but you can also use it to assess the work so that each piece of work is assessed against the same clear criteria.

  • Continuous professional development is essential to identify and address bias in the classroom. Workshops focusing on implicit and explicit bias, cultural competence and equitable teaching practices can provide educators with the tools to create inclusive learning environments. Such training encourages self-reflection and increases awareness of how bias can affect teaching and learning.

  • Inclusive practices. This includes reviewing disciplinary measures to ensure that they are fair, promoting diverse study organisation practices and providing resources to help marginalised students and ensure that all students feel safe and supported.

  • Cultural partnerships. Create partnerships with local organizations or cultural groups to promote awareness and understanding of diverse perspectives. It will help you better understand other cultural groups. If possible, involve them in the academic process as it fosters a sense of belonging and supports students' cultural identities.
