Cultural Support in Higher Education
Identifying Potential Challenges. Non-native speakers often face language barriers that hinder comprehension of lectures, participation, and writing competence, affecting both academic progress and social integration. Additionally, students unfamiliar with local academic norms may struggle with assignment formats or critical engagement practices.
Targeted Resources and Strategies. Language Assistance & Inclusive Teaching Research from the University of Michigan shows simplified, clear instruction improves comprehension without compromising academic rigour (Kebede, 2025). Strategies like Sheltered Instruction: utilizing visuals, scaffolding, and accessible language can help students gradually adapt to mainstream academic discourse. For example, in chemistry lectures, instructors provide annotated slides and glossaries of technical terms. Peer-led group sessions to review the material, helping everyone better understand it.
Clear guidance on assignment structure and genre using explanations, templates, and exemplars to address confusion experienced by those from different writing traditions. For example, an economics course uses a week's “writing workshop” where students analyse a model essay and co-create a checklist covering argument structure, citation norms, and critical analysis prompts. Peer mentoring and Supplemental Instruction programs have proven effective in reducing attrition and boosting success for underrepresented and non-native students (Sriram & Anburaj, 2024).
Cultural adaptation studies show that support from peers and staff significantly enhances academic confidence and persistence (Olagunju et al, 2024). Embedding orientation sessions and intercultural forums fosters belonging. For example, a department runs a “cultural insights” event where international students share their educational traditions and learning strategies in breakout sessions, helping all participants recognize diverse strengths and approaches.
