4.3. Design and Implement Culturally Responsive Assessment Practices. Readings
Promoting reflection and agency through co-assessment
Culturally responsive assessment is not only something done to students, it also involves practices that are done with them. Self-assessment and co-assessment strategies invite students to reflect on their own learning, values, and cultural assumptions.
Involving students in the creation of rubrics or in the evaluation of peer work helps to deconstruct assessment criteria and empower learners. For example, students might be asked to articulate what excellence looks like in a group project that includes intercultural collaboration, or to reflect on how their cultural lens shaped their response to a prompt.
These methods do not replace the lecturer’s role in evaluation, but they decentralise authority and honour the diverse knowledge that students bring. Over time, they foster metacognitive skills, build confidence, and reduce anxiety related to unfamiliar assessment forms.
