4. The network RPCI – Rede Portuguesa das Cidades Interculturais
This network - https://cidadesinterculturais.pt/ - is part of the international network of the same name which was born out of the Intercultural Cities Programme of the Council of Europe.
The aim of this network is to promote learning between cities with a view to developing their intercultural policies.
The Portuguese Network, which currently has 19 member cities, is free to join and promotes shared management with the cities and the development of a variety of projects and initiatives.
In addition, RPCI provides training and consultancy services to cities and other organisations with an interest in interculturality.
Among the projects it has been developing, we would highlight those related to education and youth work:
-
Intercultural Educators (ongoing - 2025) and Intercultural Schools (2024): the annual 2024 and 2025 projects have aimed to foster an intercultural lens in educational environments. The 2024 project developed and tested an anti-racism workshop for children and young people from 5th to 9th grade and the 2025 project aims to train teaching staff, non-teaching staff and school partners to develop intercultural competences so that they can develop workshops with the educational community. Webinars and several podcast episodes have also been developed, as well as a guide - ‘Intercultural Approach in Schools: guidance for lecturers.
-
Inclusion Influencers (2021): the aim of the project was to create content that would serve as positive alternatives, spreading kind, positive and factual messages to balance the scales on social media and offer more tools to education professionals working with children and adolescents. One of the main measures was to work with influencers to help create the content and spread the message more efficiently. Several videos and two comic strips were created as content, as well as a toolkit ‘Resources for working on Intercultural Inclusion with children and young people’.
-
NET IDEA (202-2024): its aim was to create training products on Intercultural Competences (inclusion and non-discrimination) and to encourage reflection on these issues among young people. It was an international initiative that brought together partners from Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Poland and Sweden.
Several training courses were held for professionals, themed meetings and awareness-raising activities led by young people, a communication campaign and the publication of the NET-IDEA Booklet, a guide with recommendations and lessons learnt from the project, available for download on the tools page of our website.
