The skill of Understanding Cultural Differences in Values, Behaviours, and Communication involves recognising and explaining how students' cultural backgrounds shape their academic engagement, social interactions, and learning preferences, fostering a more inclusive study environment. As well, it includes identifying and describing key cultural differences in values, behaviours, and communication styles across various cultural contexts.

Acquiring this skill enables you to:

  • Observe students’ verbal and non-verbal communication to recognise different cultural communication styles (e.g., direct vs. indirect, expressive vs. reserved).
  • Identify cultural influences on students’ classroom participation, collaboration styles, and attitudes toward authority.
  • Use culturally sensitive language when describing differences, avoiding generalisations and stereotypes.
  • Adapt explanations and instructions to accommodate students’ diverse cultural expectations and prior knowledge.
  • Reflect on personal biases when assessing students’ behaviour, ensuring a fair and culturally responsive approach.
