The skill of Identifying and interpreting verbal, non-verbal, and contextual cues (e.g., body language, etiquette, traditions) involves observing and analysing students’ communication patterns, social behaviours and interactions in order to recognise cultural influences and adapt teaching strategies accordingly.

Acquiring this skill enables you to:

  • Identify how students’ express agreement, disagreement, or uncertainty based on their cultural communication norms.
  • Observe students’ body language, eye contact, and classroom participation to assess comfort levels in different interactions.
  • Recognise when students may hesitate to ask for help due to cultural attitudes toward authority and self-reliance.
  • Adapt teaching approaches to accommodate students requiring more structured guidance or independent exploration based on their cultural background.
  • Adjust feedback and assessment methods to ensure culturally appropriate communication of expectations and performance.
